South Yorkshire Karate Championships
19th August, Barnsley.
On Sunday 19th August 13 members of The Hull & East Riding Karate Squad travelled to Barnsley to compete in the South Yorkshire Karate Championships and once again every member of the squad did themselves, the club and the region proud by winning 3 gold, 5 silver and 7 bronze medals, a very respectable amount considering the quality of the competitors at this competition.
For those of you reading this, who may think the South Yorkshire Karate Championships is only for clubs in South Yorkshire you couldn’t be further from the truth. This is a very good and well organised competition and because of this it now attracts competitors from all over Great Britain, with many top clubs from Scotland, Ireland, England and Wales now taking part and the England National KATA Squad were also competing (even though they shouldn’t really be allowed to as they are not all from the same Association), which means it is getting increasingly more difficult to win medals at this competition.
The first gold medal of the day went to 8 year old Joe Johnson, who was once again in magnificent form in the Individual KATA.
The prospect of having to beat 32 of Britain’s best young KATA competitors didn’t faze Joe at all, he kept winning round after round to reach the final where he went on to perform a fantastic display of ANNANKU to win the gold medal.
14 year old Jack Leake was the next squad member to win gold in the Individual KATA. Jack also produced some brilliant displays of ANNANKU beating everybody in his section to win Gold. However, not content with one gold medal, Jack then went on to compete in the Boys 14-15yrs Individual Fighting and although up against much taller and higher graded opponents, Jack simply raised his game and his mental toughness to produce his best ever fighting to date and beat all of his opponents with consummate ease to take yet another gold medal (WELL DONE JACK!).
10 year old Joel Edgar was in magnificent form in the Individual Fighting beating 5 opponents to reach the final but unfortunately getting narrowly beaten in the final meant that Joel won a very well earned silver medal.
17 year old Lynsey Eggleton also managed to reach the final of the Girls Individual Fighting after beating some very tough opponents in the earlier rounds. However, Lynsey came up against England International Kelly Horsefall in the final and was narrowly beaten 2-1 to come away with a very well earned silver medal.
Ben Harrison and Emma Waudby won silver in the Pairs KATA after producing some brilliant displays of SEIENCHIN and GOJUSHIO. They were beaten in the final by the England National Squad! (And let’s face it who’s going to beat them?)
The same fate fell upon Lynsey, Naomi and James in the Team KATA. It took the England National Squad to knock them out of the Team KATA but they still managed a bronze medal.
Naomi Pedder, Lynsey Eggleton and Siobhan Hayes won silver in the Female Team Fighting and Jordan Taylor, Jordan Grayson and Josh won silver in the Boys 14-15yrs Team Fighting.
Bronze medals came from Emma Waudby - Individual KATA, Ben Harrison - Individual KATA, Emma Waudby - Individual Fighting, Naomi Pedder - Individual Fighting.
Jamie Sherwood and Joel Edgar - Team Fighting, Morgan Clarke, Ben Harrison and Jamie Sherwood - Team Fighting, Morgan Clarke, Ben Harrison and Jordan Taylor - Team KATA.
A massive WELL DONE to everybody including Amy White, James Lee and Courtney Pedder who didn’t manage a medal on this occasion but who still performed very well on the day.

Shindo-kai Kata Championships
1st July, Honeywell Sports College, Barnsley
22 Hull and East Riding Squad members travelled to Barnsley to compete in the Shindo-kai Kata Championships on Sunday 1st July and what a day it turned out to be.
The Hull and East Riding Squad totally dominated the competition by winning the gold medals in in 10 of the 11 categories in which we had competitors. We also took the silver medal in the other category.
It was very pleasing for me as a coach to see all the hard work in training come to fruition in such an outstanding way. I received many very complimentary comments from the referees and officials on the “high standard of the Hull and East Riding squad”.
A full list of the results can be found on the results page however the Gold medal winnings are listed here.

English National Championships
21st and 22nd April, Ponds Forge International Sports Centre, Sheffield
Over the weekend of the 21st and 22nd of April the English Karate Federation held their 2012 National Championships at Pond Forge International Sports Centre in Sheffield.
The Hull and East Riding Karate academy were represented in the competition by (back row) Naomi Pedder, Jordan Taylor, Courtney Pedder, (front row) Morgan Clarke, Ben Harrison, James Lee and Lynsey Eggleton (not in photo).
This competition is for brown belt and above only and considering that all of our squad are still only brown belts with very little experience competing at this level they all performed brilliantly winning four bronze medals between them.
Medal winners: Ben Harrison, Morgan Clarke, Naomi Pedder and James Lee
Ben Harrison was the first medal winner competing in the boys 12 o 13 years individual Kata. This section was always going to be difficult and Ben didn’t have it easy as he kept getting drawn against some top class opponents from Ishinryu and Sale Dojo, these two clubs really are the cream of the English Karate scene. However due to Ben’s overall improvement and preparation for these championships he managed to keep beating his opponents round after round with some fantastic displays of Shukokai Kata and eventually came away with a very well earned bronze medal.
The next person to make it to the medal rostrum was 12 year old Morgan Clarke who was competing in the boys 12 to 13 years team fighting. Morgan and his team won through 2 rounds putting in some very sharp and strong performances but were eventually beaten in the semi-final by the current English Champions. Morgan and his team took the bronze medal.
Also performing very well in the girls 16 to 17 years team fighting was 16 year old Naomi Pedder and considering there were only 2 fighters in her team Naomi fought extremely well to win a bronze medal.
The same level of performance also came from James Lee in the boys 16 to 17 years team fighting where James teamed up with Callum Holmes and the two lads fought brilliantly to win a bronze medal.

Shindo-kai Junior Karate Championships (15 & below)
25th March 2012
Another Brilliant Shindo-kai Karate Competition and another brilliant display of karate by the 19 members of the Hull and East Riding Karate Squad who once again finished top of the medal table after winning a staggering 9 individual gold medals, 6 individual silver medals, 7 individual bronze medals plus 1 team gold, 1 team silver, 2 pairs kata silver and 2 pairs kata bronze.
15 year old Jordan Taylor was the star of the competition winning the gold medal in the purple belt and above individual kata category. He went on to dominate the fighting where he won the gold medal in the boys 13-15 purple belt and above category before leading his team of Elliot Daniel and Jack Leake to take the gold medal in the 13-15 team fighting by beating Paul Newby’s Olympik Dream Team in the final. Jordan also paired up with team mate Morgan Clarke in the pair’s kata where the two lads won the silver medal after a very close final round. To crown a fantastic day for Jordan he also won the competitor of the day trophy. Well done Jordan!
Back row: Emma Waudby, Morgan Clarke, Jordan Taylor, Jack leake, Kye Purkis
Front row: Joel Edgar, Evan Purkis, Sam Peers, Ben Lane
10 year old purple belts Jamie Sherwood and Adam Crossley were also in brilliant form in the boys 10-12 years purple belts and above fighting category. Even though they were both the youngest and the lowest grades in section they proved beyond any doubt that they are now ready to compete at this level. They both kept on winning fight after fight against very good opponents to reach the final where they had to compete against each other. After a very closely fought fight final it was Jamie who eventually won the gold medal with Adam coming away with a richly deserved silver medal. Well done lads. The pair of them also teamed up together in the pairs kata and they went on to win a bronze medal apiece.
Emma Waudby, Morgan Clarke, Jordan Taylor, Elliot Daniel,
Ben Harrison, Amy White
Other gold medal performances came from Joel Edgar in the 8-9 years individual kata category where he beat 27 opponents to take the gold medal. Joel went on to win the silver medal in the individual kumite and a bronze medal in the pairs kata with team mate Joe Johnson.
Ben Lane won the gold medal in the boys 8-9 years kumite after beating Joel in the final and Ben also won a bronze medal in the individual kata.
Elliot Daniel won the gold medal in the boys 13-15 years blue belt and below individual kumite category after beating club mate Jack Leake in the final. This was sweet revenge for Elliot as Jack won the gold medal beating Elliot in the final of the individual kata, the two lads then joined forces with Jordan Taylor to take the gold medal in the 13-15 open grade team kumite category
The next gold medal was won by Kye Purkis fighting brilliantly in the boys 12-13 individual kumite category. Kye had far too much speed and power for his opponents to handle, he is now developing into a very good competition fighter and a very good kata competitor. Kye’s younger brother Evan Purkis was also in fine form winning a bronze medal in the individual kata.
9 year old Sam Peers put on a very good display in both kata and fighting wining a bronze medal in both individual events.
Aboudi Neema put on a very good display in the individual kata where he won a bronze medal with some very powerful performances of Ananku.
Also performing some very good displays of Ananku was Jade Baynes who did exceptionally well to win a bronze medal in the girl’s individual kata.
A gold medal performance came from 11 year old Emma Waudby who fought like a true champion in the girl’s 10-12 fighting category where she beat every opponent with consummate ease to win yet another gold meal. Emma also did extremely well in the individual kata where she won a bronze medal and also a silver medal in pairs kata with team mate Ben Harrison.
Ben Harrison also did very well in the individual kata where he beat some very good opponents to reach the final. Ben was narrowly beaten in the final by 1 flag but still came away with a well-earned silver medal.
Morgan Clarke was in good form in the individual fighting and was very unlucky to miss out on a medal placing. However Morgan went on to lead his team of Ben Harrison and Jamie Sherwood to a silver medal in the boys 10-12 year old team fighting category.
8 year old Joe Johnson put on a master class of Shukokai kata to win a silver medal in the individual kata and a bronze medal in the pairs kata.
Other excellent performances came from James Turner, Mia Bower and Amy White who all did themselves and the club proud with the 3 of them just missing out on a medal placing.
I received a lot of compliments from the referees and officials at the championships who kept commenting on the very high standards of the Hull and East Riding Karate Squad, so I would like to say a massive “well done” to everyone who attended the competition. You can all give yourselves a big pat on the back as you continue to dominate the local karate scene. Well done “Guys and Girls”

EKF KYU Grade English Karate Championships
22nd January 2012
The English Karate Federation held their inaugural Kyu grade karate championships at the Ponds Forge International Sports centre in Sheffield on Sunday 22nd January. This was a very big competition with hundreds of the best Kyu grades from all over England coming together to see who could be crowned “English Champions”.
The Hull and East Riding Karate Academy took a squad of 15 athletes to the event and by the end of the competition we had won an amazing amount of medals, 5 gold, 9 silver and 4 bronze which made us one of the top clubs at the competition.
Left to right above back row. Lynsey Eggleton, Courtney Pedder, Naomi Pedder, Jordan Taylor, Josif Neema, Elliot Daniel, James Lee, Morgan Clarke.
Front row. Ben Harrison, Joel Edgar, Emma Waudby, Aboudi Neema, Joe Johnson.
Gold medal winners (English Champions) left to right. Lynsey Eggleton, Naomi Pedder, Aboudi Neema, Jordan Taylor, Elliot Daniel.
Elliot Daniel fought brilliantly in the boys 13-15 year age group. Elliot showed he is really developing into a great competition fighter with some really good footwork and speed of punching to win the gold medal, Elliot also won himself a Bronze medal in the team fighting.
Jordan Taylor won gold in his fighting section and also won a bronze in the team fighting with Elliot.
The next to win gold and be crowned English Campion was 12 year old Aboudi Neema who won both his disabled kata sections to win 2 gold medals with some outstanding displays of “annanku”. Aboudi also showed great spirit and determination when he competed against much taller opponents in the boys fighting. Aboudi’s fighting spirit and determination served him well as he went on to win a bronze medal for fighting. (Well done Aboudi, you’re a star!)
Also winning gold were Naomi Pedder and Lynsey Eggleton who were crowned English Champions in the girls 16-17 years team fighting. Naomi and Lynsey and also won silver medals in the team kata along with team mate Courtney Pedder.
Courtney Pedder had a magnificent day competing in the female individual kata where she beat some extremely good opponents to reach the final where she was narrowly beaten. Winning a silver medal at this level of competition is a very good achievement in itself.
Also winning silver for kata was Jack Leake. Jack also showed that he is not just very good at kata but also fighting as he also won the silver medal in the boy’s individual fighting.
Josif Neema was the next to win a silver medal after some very hard fought rounds in the senior individual fighting. Josif was narrowly beaten in the final and only just missed out on the gold medal.
Emma Waudby had to compete against 43 people in her fighting section but this didn’t deter Emma who simply kept beating opponent after opponent to reach the final where she was narrowly beaten coming away with a very well earned silver medal.
9 year old Joel Edgar won a bronze medal in the individual fighting after winning 5 fights in the earlier rounds.
One of the unluckiest members of our squad had to be James Lee who trained very hard leading up to this competition and was fighting brilliantly on the day to reach the final of the boys 16-17 years individual fighting. With only 10 seconds left in the match James was easily wining, he was "nailed on" to win the gold medal but unfortunately in the heat of battle James threw a punch and dislocated his shoulder. With James shouting out in agony the fight had to be stopped while he received urgent medical attention before being taken to hospital. This resulted in the fight being awarded to his opponent. James was so close to the gold medal but unfortunately it wasn’t to be and in his absence James was awarded the silver medal.
Paul Galloway and Josif Neema won silver medals in the senior team fighting while Morgan Clarke, Ben Harrison and Joe Johnson where all very unlucky not to win a medal at the championships but still managed to put on some brilliant performances against really top class opponents.
I would like to say a massive well done to all of the squad. You really did yourselves, the club and Shindo-kai Karate Association proud. Well done to every one of you.
